Alaska’s Health Benefit Exchange Decision
The Alaska health insurance exchange will be operated by the federal government. Governor Sean Parnell opted for the federal government to be responsible for key operating provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
Exchange Criteria and Resources
Web based enrollment resources will be housed by the Department of Health and Human Services. Residents of Alaska will be able to enroll on October 1st, 2013. Individuals may purchase qualified products approved for the exchange by January 2014 to avoid individual penalties.
Several health insurance providers have submitted products for approval. These qualified plans will be sold through the Alaska health insurance exchange. Grants have been awarded to several non profit organizations to provide resources to help residents navigate products, tax credits, and educational components of exchange operations.
